NOTIZEN / THE NEWS unfolds in public space — a meeting point of bodies, signals, and shifting weather — where news, protest, and love collide in real time.

Characters move through a world saturated with information: headlines flashing, whispers rising, gestures repeating like echoes. Signdance Theatre’s fusion of sign languages, dance, and theatre gives this turbulence a physical pulse — a language of clarity, resistance, and connection.

Transmitter Performance, led by composer Angelina Schwammerlin, threads the piece with an elemental musical landscape Co-composed and shaped by long-term collaboration with Deaf Signdance Collective Director David Bower. Sound becomes vibration, rhythm becomes architecture, and silence becomes a force of its own.

Slovenian puppetry artist Barbara Bulatović expands the world with delicate, uncanny object theatre — small movements that open emotional space, surreal images that shift the air, and visual poetry that lingers long after the scene dissolves.

THE NEWS”: The Story of a Monster Who Feeds People News, Piece by Piece

PUF OFF continued on Pula’s waterfront with an event marking the International Week of the Deaf. Presented in collaboration with the Istrian Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Signdance Theatre, the performance was titled Notizen/The News, or Vijesti and Novosti in Croatian. From the outset, its subject was clear, communicated through both spoken and sign language.

The characters move through a world saturated with information. Headlines flash, whispers intensify and gestures repeat like echoes.

Led by composer Angelina Schwammerlin, the performance is immersed in an elemental musical landscape, created and shaped through her long-term collaboration with directors David Bower and Isolte Avila of the long-established Deaf/disabled-led Signdance Collective.

Slovenian puppeteer Barbara Bulatović expands this world through tiny movements that open emotional spaces, surreal images that transform the atmosphere and moments of visual poetry.

“I’m a big monster. I’ll feed you the news, piece by piece,” one of the characters warns.

These days, it is popular to fear the media, even though everyone consumes it. The performance also suggests that a person does not need to hear in order to be exposed to information, or to misinformation, as we now often call it.

“News, today’s news, yesterday’s news... Let’s move on,” the performers shout as they tear strips from daily newspapers.

These ten days of NOTIZEN rehearsals and creation (Croatia August ,2025) , proved both intensely challenging and profoundly enriching. The work compelled me to step beyond the indoor theatre's comfort zone, prompting me to re-examine the relationships between performer and audience, sign language and aesthetics, communication and negotiation, individual elements and the collective whole….Integrating multiple elements NOTIZEN's work is inherently diverse, incorporating signdance, songs, puppetry, and live music.

Our ongoing exploration of how these elements might collaborate rather than operate in isolation has been central. Through persistent experimentation, we learned not only to bring out each element's uniqueness but also to find their shared breathing space and rhythm, enabling them to collectively tell a cohesive story.
